The artist , a character colourfully named Dynaso Wegoso , rap-sings the hook: &#8220;Mukube paver mwasse akawanga.&#8221; Translated literally: &#8220;Hit them with the paver\u2026 crack their skull.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Dynaso Wegoso - PAVER | OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kXqgG9JhhvQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The low-angle shot and the comical walk-dance initially caught my eye. But only long enough for the hook to, well, hook me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mukube paver? Seriously?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That hook has since ignited debate both online and in real life. Is it reckless to platform a song with such a brazen message of violence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To give this the depth it deserves, context comes first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;The Real Paver Attacks Behind the Song<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kampala, like many third-world cities, has always had a theft problem. &#8220;Kampala si bizimbe&#8221; has long been part of the local lexicon. A warning to newcomers that the city&#8217;s real danger isn&#8217;t its skyline, it&#8217;s the people moving beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most disturbing form of this is violent robbery. Boda boda ambushes and gangs known as &#8220;Eggaali,&#8221;&nbsp; mostly juveniles from city slums: who roam, vandalise, assault, and steal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But over the last two years, a more specific and chilling trend has emerged in the hinterlands between suburb and slum , in Naalya, Namugongo, Kyanja, Najjera, and along the Northern Bypass. Victims are being struck with a type of stone known, as you might guess, as a paver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These attacks have left scores dead and dozens more grievously injured ,some permanently paralysed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s against this backdrop that Dynaso Wegoso. Signed to Black Market Records (formerly home to Daddy Andre, Nina Roz, and John Blaq), he is now dividing opinion with his breakout hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Many Consider &#8220;Paver&#8221; a Dangerous Anthem.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number of people are alarmed , and not just because of this song. There appears to be a trend of emerging artists reaching for extreme violence as lyrical currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take Kapeke&#8217;s 2025 blockbuster &#8220;Kaba&#8221;. One of Uganda&#8217;s biggest songs last year, with 4.2 million YouTube views. In which he raps &#8220;Kanya nsingo\u2026 tema ensingo\u2026 fumita ensingo&#8221;: aim for the throat, cut the throat, pierce the throat. The song triggered a viral dance where listeners mimicked slitting each other&#8217;s throats in clubs across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Paver&#8221; now seems to be riding the same current, racking up 159,000 YouTube views in just five days following the release of its official music video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most vocal critics are calling on the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to ban it outright. Their argument is straightforward. The lyrics are a direct instruction aimed at millions of young, impressionable ears, amplified by social media in ways that weren&#8217;t possible before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UCC has form here. It has previously banned Lil Pazo&#8217;s &#8220;Enkudi&#8221; and multiple Gravity Omutujju songs, including &#8220;Okwepicha&#8221; and &#8220;Omunio&#8221;, for vulgarity. As far back as 2008. Then-Minister of Ethics James Nsaba Buturo reportedly banned Master Blaster from performing &#8220;Embooko&#8221; on the grounds of sexual immorality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The critics&#8217; question is pointed: if songs about sexual innuendo justified bans, shouldn&#8217;t a song that explicitly instructs listeners to &#8220;crack their skull&#8221;, in the middle of a live urban crime wave , justify one even more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Other Side: A Mirror Held Up to Inequality.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defenders of the song aren&#8217;t ignoring its tone. They acknowledge it is unapologetically raw, and frankly beyond borderline insensitive given the real damage paver attacks continue to cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they argue that banning the song does nothing about the conditions that made it possible for &#8220;hit them with a paver&#8221; to become a relatable phrase in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From their perspective, the young people most likely to be influenced by &#8220;Paver&#8221; are already locked out of legal income pathways. Banning the song hurts the artist, derails what appears to be a genuine breakout hit, and buries the ugly economic reality driving the crime , without solving any of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this camp, the song is not a cause. It&#8217;s a symptom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;No Clean Verdict ; And a Twist.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How this debate resolves, or whether it resolves at all, remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here&#8217;s what&#8217;s interesting: when you actually sit with the song, the literal reading of its lyrics starts to feel like a misreading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wegoso&#8217;s refrains and wordplay around &#8220;mpisa mbi&#8221; (bad manners) and &#8220;bisambi&#8221; (thighs) reveal something else entirely , layers of sexual innuendo that suggest the track may have nothing to do with violent crime at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which opens up a whole other argument. Fans might say the song isn&#8217;t glorifying violence , but detractors will counter that if the innuendo is sexual and explicit, the government&#8217;s historical standards around that content apply too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, fans will point to the song&#8217;s roots in contemporary Caribbean dancehall , acts like Skillibeng, Masicka, Ayetian, and Skeng , as creative context. Critics will see that as exactly the problem: importing a culture of violent music into our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a hyperconnected world of widening inequality, both points land , and neither fully wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Paver&#8221; is becoming more than a viral hit.
